The yarn is usable, best with larger needles since it's kinda nubby and knarled. My suggestions were to knit it with wool and then felt it or since the yarn is fairly sturdy, knit a cool bag on big needles and then line the inside with a coordinating fabric.

mmmm... a bag. huh. maybe i could do that. at the very least, i could make the sides, and use fabric for the bottom. i haven't the slightest idea how i'd knit the bottom.

amy: i think you have to come back and help me :)

the yarn is raw silk.......would that still felt if used with wool?
using it for a bag is a good idea, felted or otherwise! :)

Wool and silk felt well together. I felted a purse in wool and yarn made from recycled silk saris. I would recommend a test swatch. Also remember to knit on needles that are 25% bigger than the gauge requires. The yarn needs room to felt together, space for the fibers to bond together. You can try hand felting with a bucket, hot water, wool soap and a plunger. Call me for more details.

one more question amy: can silk alone be felted? this makes me wish i'd bought more of the yarn, even tho i am not really knitting right now. felted silk sounds very luxe. maybe i can find more in tucson next year!
